I've got a couple Ffordes on the shelf but haven't given 'em a go. I've been steeped in the Eastern European stuff for so long that I'm not sure how I'd do with a Western dystopia. But on color: In Slavenka Drakulic's How We Survived Communism she (apparently...) discusses the tremendous importance of hair dye in communist life- that little burst of color was even controlled by the state. This reminds me of some Czech characters in Josef Skvorecky's The Engineer of Human Souls who, as expats in Canada, dress in ridiculous outfits of hot this and neon that. Nicely done.
